The Original Sazerac

Before it called for rye whiskey, the New Orleans classic was made with cognac.

  • 1/2 oz Absinthe
  • 2 oz Cognac
  • 1/2 oz Simple syrup
  • 3 dashes Peychaud's bitters
  • Garnish: Lemon twist
  1. Rinse a chilled Old Fashioned glass with the absinthe, fill with crushed ice and set aside.

  2. Add the remaining ingredients into a mixing glass with ice and stir.

  3. Discard the ice and any excess absinthe from the prepared glass and strain the drink into it.

  4. Garnish with a lemon twist.
